Norwich Terriers often, but not always, have docked tails.
The tail is cut off using a knife or scissors. There are two types of amputation: the standard “runt clip”, which leaves about one inch of the tip of the tail, and a modified “runt clip”, which leaves about one half inch of the tip. The amputated tip is then clipped to prevent excessive movement.
Many veterinarians prefer the modified “runt clip”, as they feel it is not as traumatic to the dog, is a more aesthetically pleasing tail, and reduces complications in future surgeries. The modified clip means that damage to the bone cannot progress over time and eventually cause a permanent curvature of the tail.
The CKC does not require that Norwich Terriers be docked; however, many clubs and registries require it. Your club or registry may also require you to register the docked tail with them. Registration is not a requirement, but it is recommended.
